Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance - Ruth Emmie Lang

4.5/5 Stars

Magical and uplifting with memorable characters.

Weylyn Grey may just be a wizard. He runs with wild wolves. He has a horned magical pig and can control the elements. This control, however, is erratic and unpredictable and Welwyn uses this as a tool not to remain close to the ones he loves...

Once Welwyn wanders into your life, you’ll wish he’d never leave. He’s such a memorable, lovable character and it is clear why he had such an effect on all those he meets on his personal journey.

His charm rubs off onto the supporting cast of characters who become memorable in themselves. In fact, the story is told from the perspective of all the people who have been touched by Welwyn in some way. This acts as a perfect device to move the story along and not to get bogged down.

The chapters are short, punchy and fast paced. The book is easy to read, not that it is simple but that it’s driven by an exceptional protagonist and great supporting characters . This is a book full of charm and magic without becoming fantasy.

There is a perfect blend of joy and despair and wonderful characters brought to life. It’s beautifully written and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Magical realism at its best - a magical, lovable, gentle love story.
